INDIA'S HOGWARTS LIKE ARCHITECTURE- THE JUNAGADH CAVES
Everyone has heard of Harry Potter’s Hogwarts School. As Potterheads we all have at least once dreamt of getting a letter from Hogwarts & going to that magical place.
But, Did you know about India’s own ‘Hogwarts like architecture!’
Well yes, the Junagadh Buddhist Caves located in Junagadh district of Gujarat (India) is one perfect example. These are a group of 3 man-made caves- Uparkot, Khapra Kodia & Baba Pyare caves that were built as early as 1st-4th century AD. These caves are carved out from living rocks. The cave also referred to as Uparkot (which means built on an upraised platform) is divided into chambers which are connected through stairs.
The group of caves consist of 3 tiers & the caves of Uparkot are cut into 2 floors. There is a big chamber constructed in Chaitya style with pillars supporting the roof. The pillars have beautifully carved base & capital. Various other chambers served as resting places for monks. The caves also have an appealing entrance, water cistern & assembly halls.
